Building with hempcrete

One of our specialities is building with Hempcrete. This material provides a unique look, incomparable to any other, reduces your building’s carbon footprint and results in a healthier indoor environment.

Hempcrete is a versatile and sustainable building material made from combining water, hemp aggregate and lime based binder. The material can be seen in brick format, corrugated sheeting, insulation, panelling and more commonly in-situ wall pours.

Natural

Hempcrete is a fully natural product with no chemical additives. It’s environmentally friendly farming practices translate into an eco-friendly building material. Hemp requires minimal irrigation, fertiliser, and no chemicals or pesticides. In Australia, it can be cultivated in various climates and even produce up to three harvests per year.

Highly Fire Resistant

Hempcrete is rated and certified for use in BAL-FZ (Fire Zone), the highest fire resistance rating available.

Complete Wall System

Externally lime rendered Hempcrete around a timber frame forms a complete wall, eliminating the need for additional materials typically used in traditional wall systems, such as cladding, fixings, wall wrap, battens, insulation, plasterboard, paint, and even architraves.

High-Quality Thermal Insulator

The standard Hempcrete wall thickness of 250mm, provides excellent thermal mass and an R-value of 3.55. In comparison, standard 90mm thick insulation batts have an R-value of around 2.5.

Soundproofing Acoustic Properties

Externally rendered Hempcrete helps to reduce noise pollution, creating a more serene and comfortable living environment.

Mould, Damp, Rodent, and Pest Resistant

The natural lime render and binder is vapour permeable, with moisture buffering qualities. This helps with passive humidity control that reduces the occurrence of issues such as mould and timber rot. In additional the high level of alkalinity in the lime deters rodents, termites and other pests.

Retrofitting and Renovation

Hempcrete is great method to effectively retrofit poorly insulated homes, clad with brick veneer, weatherboard, and cement sheets, enhancing insulation and draft-proofing for improved energy efficiency.

Breathability

The wall system is breathable, helping to regulate indoor humidity levels and prevent mould growth.

No Paint Required

Hempcrete eliminates the need for paint, which covers a large area of a house and is a major source of volatile organic compounds in homes.

Carbon Sequestration

Hempcrete sequesters carbon in two phases. During its growth, the hemp plant absorbs carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, storing carbon in its fibres and the soil. When used as Hempcrete, the woody fibres react with the lime-based binder, continuing to solidify and sequester carbon throughout the building’s lifespan. An average home using 50m³ of hemp can lock in around 5.5 tonnes of carbon, resulting in a net carbon benefit of approximately 50 tonnes compared to the emissions from conventional wall materials (about 45-50 tonnes).

All these benefits combine to create a natural, breathable, and healthy living space. Building with Hempcrete reduces a building’s carbon footprint and fosters a healthier indoor environment.
